1st Birthday Traditions

A few weeks ago my good friend mentioned how she’d purchased a personalized Fontaine Maury plate for her daughter. The plate would become the special plate that could only be used for one very special day out of each year, that is her daughter's birthday.

I love traditions-- and with my own little one’s birthday right around the corner, I couldn’t resist finding our own unique tradition to share. Shortly after setting out on my mission to find this new family tradition, I stumbled upon the book “On the Night You Were Born,” written and illustrated by the talented Nancy Tillman.

It’s an amazing story about how the animals and nature rejoiced on the evening they received news of your child’s birth. Here’s a short excerpt:

“On the night you were born,
the moon smiled with such wonder
that the stars peeked in to see you
and the night wind whispered,
“Life will never be the same.”…
So enchanted with you were the wind and the rain
That they whispered the sound of your wonderful name.”

The illustrations are really magical and the words reinforce the special place your little one has, not only in the hearts of his/her own family but also in the entire world.

Each birthday, as our tradition, my husband and I will sit down to read this darling book to our equally darling baby boy. But I'd love to hear about your traditions! Whether it's for a first birthday, the holidays or just for fun-- what special things do you do as a family?

Very sweet tradition. Traditions are so important for families. We have different one's for each of our birthdays. But I love that my daughter always has cupcakes for her birthday cake from Billy's or Magnolia. Yum!

My dad has a few goofy traditions that have, over time, become some of my favorite events. Each February, we watch Groundhog's day and inevitably quote Bill Murray lines for the next few weeks. On a more serious note, each year for my birthday, my mother gives me a photo she took during some point in my childhood with a handwritten note on the back. This collection of pictures is now one of my most treasured possessions. Aside from the fun surprise of getting a blast from the past when I open my birthday card, the sentiments expressed on the back are priceless. Sigh...I should call my mom now.

I found your blog by searching for first birthday traditions. I love this book (my baby was given it by an aunt when she was born) and I'm going to read this for her birthday too! What a good idea!

I think we are also going to buy a notebook that guests at her birthday parties can sign each year.
