Guest Blog on Hostess with the Mostess: Fashion as Event Inspiration

Way back before I started working at FineStationery.com, when The Finer Things was but a twinkle in my eye, I discovered Hostess with the Mostess. Jenn's keen eye for hip entertaining and design flourishes remain a huge influence.

I was thrilled when I was invited to guest on the Hostess blog and share some inspiring entertaining ideas. Click here to read my guest post, Fashion as Event Inspiration, on Hostess with the Mostess!

Pink & Grey

I've been feeling grey a lot lately. It's definitely the color of the season for me. A lovely look for winter or spring is grey paired off with light, rosy pinks. I think this color combination would be just perfect for a birthday celebration.

Vintage Baby Shower

After seeing Grace's post on the incredible work of Jennifer Murphy, I fell in love with the dapper stork pictured below and was inspired to create a mini-board for a vintage baby shower. I definitely do not write very much on the subject of baby showers, but as more of my friends welcome new additions, I find that it is something I should definitely take the time to include.

Wedding Wednesday: Red and White with a Touch of Pink

For today's Wedding Wednesday, Rebecca and I selected a lovely red and white chandelier invitation from Crane & Co. I think red and white is a classic combination, but I wanted to mix it up a little bit and throw in touches of pink for a fun and festive twist on a classic combo.

Wedding Wednesday: Red and White with Touches of Pink
Row 1
- Neatly packaged favours from Amy Atlas [via HWTM]
- Red and white chandelier invitation
Row 2
- A lovely white dress with a sash of red
- Red velvet wedding cake - yum!
- You don't need 99 red balloons; a few clusters will do
Row 3
- Handmade cupcake liner poms and a beautiful bouquet (this is one of my favourite weddings)
- I love this bold red tabletop with simple white accents like the napkins and chairs
Row 4
- Sweet striped skirts from the knot!
- Bridesmaid dresses in shades of pink and red [via elizabeth anne]
- Pretty pumps from with this ring
- Delicious pomegranate molasses on yogurt [via tastespotting]

Be sure to stop by Tastefully Entertaining. While I went a little off the beaten path in my interpretation of today's pick, Rebecca absolutely nailed it. You must check out her romantic and glamorous interpretation of this red chandelier wedding. Here's a sneak peak!

Tuesday Trends: Orange

As designers showcase their Spring 2009 Ready to Wear collections, one color has really stood out to me. Although it likely won't hit stores en masse until early '09, designers are taking note that this bold, beautiful hue is going to sizzle come Spring.

Tuesday Trends: Orange & Co.
[all runway photos via style.com]

Pink & Orange
Pink & Fuchsia baby girl birth announcement, Anne Klein patent leather heels, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Pink, orange and gold braided choker, Vera Wang orange and white lace invitation, Luella

Orange & White
Oscar de la Renta, Floral peep toes from anthro, Mandarin orange flower party invitation, Rag and Bone (my favourite dress of them all), Orange letterpress koi fish stationery, Chevron stripe dress by Tracey Reese

Burnt Sienna
Prentiss Douthit birth announcement, Monique Lhuillier, Gemma bracelet

Thus far, orange is not a stand alone color for 2009. It is frequently paired with another hue like pinks and fuchsias for a bright pop or white for a cooler feel. Deep oranges like burnt sienna are simply smoldering and are typically accented by natural materials or muted metallics.

Grey and Orange

Today I'm feeling the cool color of grey paired with the vibrant glow of orange. I think grey is such a great fall color to pair with oranges, yellows and purples. I think it would make an exceptional palate for an autumn birthday or perhaps a less traditional color scheme for a wedding.

Grey and Orange Inspiration Board

- Handmade grey dress with Denyse Schmidt trim
- Delicious drinks and tidy tabletops via Social Design
- Lovely black accents in this hibiscus necklace
- Grey clutch wallet from Hayden-Harnett
- Beautiful scalloped edges on this Bumpy Road ring
- Grey Vera Wang invitation paired with an orange envelope liner

Mini Caramel Apples

I thought the mini caramel apples mentioned on Party Perfect were a fabulous idea for any Fall party. They're exactly like the real deal, only smaller (and with a higher caramel to apple ratio, yum)! Here's a helpful recipe and tutorial from Sakurako Kitsu [original by Cat Cora].

1) Wash and peel a large, fairly tart apple like Granny Smith. Using a melon baller, extract balls of apple. A large apple will yield about 6 balls (plus scraps for you to snack on). Place in a bowl and sprinkle with lemon juice.

2) Prepare a dipping station. You can use mini cupcake papers (as shown above) and lollipop sticks. In addition to a bowl of warmed caramel apple dip, you may want to add chopped nuts, m&ms or sprinkles.

3) Carefully spear each ball of apple through the ROUND end (not the part with the skin). Keep the flat end on the bottom, so they stand upright. Using a paper towel, blot off the excess lemon juice. This is important- if the apple has too much juice left on it, the caramel won't stick.

4) Dip the apple in the caramel, using a twirling motion to coat it evenly.

5) Transfer the apple to the nuts and roll, using a gentler twirling motion.

6) Stand the apples upright in the cups and let them chill in the fridge to solidify.

Wedding Wednesday: Sage and Ivory Lace

Welcome back to Wedding Wednesday! Sorry for the lack of posts this week - I am working on some pretty cool projects that I can't wait to share with all of you! Until then, I must shroud my whereabouts in mystery. :) This week, Rebecca and I selected a lovely sage green and ivory lace wedding invitation for our inspiration boards.

Row 1:
- I couldn't resist using one of the latest designs from Monique Lhullier's Spring 2009 collection
- Delicate lace-like details on a cake of white
- Our inspiring invitation

Row 2:
- This bouquet from Martha Stewart features lush florals accompanied by real herbs (including sage, of course)
- Pretty lace and doily projects from the fabulously talented Sweet Paul

Row 3:
- These sage bridesmaid dresses with ivory sashes are simple and stunning
- Have guests sign in style using this gorgeous handmade sage guest book
- I love the slight metallic sheen on this ring pillow
- A romantic invitation deserves a romantic reception
- Personalized doilies make an adorable adornment for your reception (or a practical item to use as isle markers for the family & guests)

Be sure to stop by Tastefully Entertaining to see Rebecca's inspiration board. I am kind of in love with her bouquet and tabletop - very romantic! Here's a sneak peak.

A few tricks for your treats!

I am totally flipping for these awesome baking supplies from Fancy Flours! I love baking, but I have had the hardest time finding clever accents. Thanks to this site, I will have some spooky sweets for this year's Halloween bash! [via Create My Event]

Tricks to sweeten your treats

- Imagine the possibilities for the fondant or chocolate transfers!
- I love these spooky spider web cakes and playful banners.
- These sugar crystals are similar to ones that Kelly featured a while ago but without the flavorings, which I prefer.
- I like making the traditional sugar skulls, but for those who are not into the process and desire brighter colours - voila!
- Is it possible to find cupcake wrappers dreamy? I'm going to have to say yes, yes it is.

If you love baking or are just looking for some serious eye candy (heh), head on over to Fancy Flours. Yum!

Orange Crush

The fine folks at Checkerboard have sent me ANOTHER knock out wedding inspiration board featuring the bright and bold autumnal hue of orange. I love it! Take it away Checkerboard!

Orange Wedding Board

Top row: Checkerboard's Three Roses announcement, Cabochon coral and gold dangle earrings
Middle Row: Coral and Gold peep toe slingback shoes and assorted bangles, Checkerboard's Bon Vivant invitation
Bottom Row: Boutonnière, Strapless dress
Orange hydrangea, pedestal cake and butterfly are assorted webpics.

You opted for an intimate affair, now it’s time to share the experience and “make it official” with everyone in your lives. Gather friends and family for an autumn reception. The glowing golden shades of tangerine-orange warm the classic cream and sable brown duet. A dramatic release of butterflies during your event is spectacular accent to the striking palette, and won’t be soon forgotten.

The release of butterflies is a delightful addition to any summer or early autumn event. The delicate display adds a touch of drama while the butterflies themselves symbolize transformation and a lightness of heart. Interesting note for those planning a destination event in Mexico; Monarch butterflies migrate to the mountains of central Mexico during October and early November. Every year the mountains are alive with these fluttering works of art.”

Wedding Wednesday: A Brown and Frosted Pink Fete

Welcome once more to Wedding Wednesday where Rebecca and I take one invitation and create inspiration boards for a variety of wedding-related events. This week, we selected a lovely pink and brown wedding invitation from Checkerboard for our inspiration.

Pink and Brown with a Touch of Cream - A Neapolitan Wedding Inspiration Board

Row 1:
- I am smitten with this Adrianna Papell Grecian Halter Gown. There's just something about pink and gold that I love!
- Neapolitan Ice Cream is a fun and appropriate dessert for the occasion
- A pretty pink table top from Martha
- The brown ribbons and floral touches make this cake oh-so appetizing

Row 2:
- The brown sashes on these chair coverings mirror the sash on the invitation
- Chocolate dipped meringues make a sweet treat for guests
- Our inspiring pink and brown wedding invitation
- I love outdoor weddings, but sometimes the tents can be a little... stark. Hanging festive fabrics or lanterns lends a lighthearted touch to your event. [Brides]

Row 3:
- These adorable Button Boutonnières are a great alternative to floral boutonnières and will last much longer
- This handmade Ring Pillow is a lovely inversion of our invitation
- Although we are working primarily with pale pinks, I wanted to include some brighter options like this Neapolitan centerpiece and striped table runner. Both compliment our original palate while adding an extra bust of colour.

I hope you enjoyed this week's Wedding Wednesday. Here's a sneak peak of Rebecca's beautiful board. Be sure to stop by Tastefully Entertaining for more fabulous finds!

Tuesday Trends: Nature Gal

Wildlife, florals and natural elements (like wooden or feathered adornments) are expected to stay strong through Fall 2008. Runway collections from ADAM, Gary Graham and Nina Ricci featured fall foliage and autumnal auburns [style]. Is this a natural response to the renewed environmental consciousness or just fashion's nod to nature?
